Great Time Had at Scout Mountain Winery's Christmas Open House

My mom and I went to Scout Mountain Winery's Christmas Open House this past Saturday and had a great time. A crowd of about a dozen had just departed with two cases of wine as we were arriving, making room for the two of us plus a couple others. Owner Margaret Schad had out down herself with a plentiful array of appetizers, including her homemade bread and dipping sauce. We sampled about four of the wines, including a couple of their newest ones, snacked on the goodies, and had wonderful conversations, before making our purchase. My mom purchased a semi-sweet red wine, which I will remain quiet about as it is a gift. I purchased two, one being their Apple-Cherry (I also got the last bottle until 2010), a sweet red dessert wine, and the other being their Chambourcin Blush, a semi-sweet red wine that tastes of cherries and strawberries. For just going to the open house we both received a free gift of our choice. We each picked a bottle opener but could have chosen a decorative wine bag or sleigh basket of candy instead.

There is still one more weekend of Scout Mountain Winery's Christmas Open House, this Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 19 and 20) from noon to 6 p.m. You are sure in for good time, good wine and good treats. If you want more information or directions, call Mike and Margaret at the winery at 877-351-8607.

Thank you Mike and Margaret for a wonderful time and being wonderful host!

"NUNCRACKERS, The Nunsense Christmas Musical" at Hayswood Theatre

Buy your tickets now for NUNCRACKERS, The Nunsense Christmas Musical at Hayswood Theatre.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken are back in Hayswood Community Theatre's good-hearted and hilarious Christmas musical comedy, “Nuncrackers.” This time the good nuns have gone high-tech, televising their annual Christmas concert from their new cable access studio built in the convent basement. Reverend Mother Mary Regina has her hands full trying to maintain the proper convent decorum while marshalling her disparate crew to put on an entertaining show. Streetwise Sister Mary Robert Anne is a perennial show biz wannabe, yearning for the bright lights of Carnegie Hall. Spaced-out Sister Mary Paul is a former country music singer, and Sister Mary Hubert aspires to be a gospel singer. It doesn't help that Revered Mother herself grew up in a circus family and can't resist a turn in the spotlight. The audience has assembled and the show must go on, but everything that can go wrong does. Father Virgil tries to do a cooking segment but drinks too much of the recipe's rum. Sister Mary Leo, whose desire is to be the first nun ballerina, gets injured just before her big dancing scene in “The Nutcracker.” Sister Mary Paul, also called Sister Amnesia, keeps teaching the children the wrong lyrics for songs such as “Here We Come-a-Waffle-ing.” Even the convent's Christmas presents go missing. Necessity is the mother of invention, and the Little Sisters of Hoboken rise to the occasion with escalating mirth and mayhem.

This Christmas musical comedy will take place at Hayswood Theatre November 27 through December 13. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets can be purchased at the Blaine H. Wiseman Visitor Center or by calling 888-738-2137. For more information and ticket prices, visit hayswoodtheatre.com.

Corydon an Ideal Weekend Get-Away for Those On a Budget

This blog was posted on the Indiana Chamber Blog on September 15.

My ladyfriend and I took advantage of some lovely late summer weather last weekend and headed down to Indiana’s former state capital — Corydon. We stayed at the Kintner House, a well-known bed and breakfast. We felt like royalty in the William Henry Harrison room, which serves as an homage to our former President (although his stint at the helm was brief).

While in Harrison County, we toured the first capitol building and an early Governor’s mansion (I even bought an artistic rendering of the scene from a local consignment shop for my new home).

In the afternoon, we took a cave tour at Squire Boone Caverns — an Indiana Chamber member. The tour was quite enlightening as we meandered through stalactites and stalagmites nearly nine stories below the ground. Seeing rock formations formed over millions of years is quite humbling — a feeling most of us don’t experience nearly enough (if my hours of watching reality television — or watching Kanye West do anything — are any indication). We also sported a serious glute burn on the 60-foot climb up a spiral stair case back to the surface.

All told, if you’re on a budget and looking to get away on a one-tank trip – to borrow vernacular from Bob Gregory – I highly recommend the Corydon area, especially as fall approaches. Visit Indiana’s blog has a more detailed post highlighting the history and allure of our former capital, as well.

Run For The Wall Cruises Into Corydon on a Mission

Run For The Wall (RFTW) was founded in 1989 by Vietnam Veterans James Gregory and Bill Evans. The two traveled across America on motorcycles promoting their message through local radio, TV, and newspapers. Their purpose was to provide facts regarding the thousands of men and women still unaccounted for from all wars. They sought to honor the memory of those killed in action and support military personnel. As wars wage on, the need to spread awareness still exists today and the Run For The Wall tradition continues every May.

On Tuesday, May 19, Run For The Wall will be passing through Corydon. The riders will be escorted through Downtown Corydon from I-64 exit 105, by the Harrison County Reserve Officers. Expected arrival time is 6 p.m. (EDT). Residents and visitors are encouraged to show their support by lining the sidewalks of Capital Avenue to greet the riders as they parade through town.
