Indiana is turning 194! Celebrate at Corydon Capitol State Historic Site

Indiana is turning 194!
Celebrate at Corydon Capitol State Historic Site on Dec. 10.

Indiana is turning 194! Corydon Capitol State Historic Site is celebrating on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Wright Interpretive Center. Living historian Brian Cushing, performing as early settler John Tipton, brings to life one of Indiana's most successful settlers.

John Tipton immigrated to Harrison County at the age of 17 to take up farming. It wasn't long before he was commanding a company of the Harrison County Yellow Jackets, fighting with them at the Battle of Tippecanoe. Following the War of 1812, he was promoted to Brigadier General. Returning to Harrison County, he served as sheriff and then in the State House of Representatives for the new state of Indiana. He served eight years as a U.S. senator. Tipton helped found the towns of Logansport and Columbus.

Brian Cushing has been re-enacting for more than ten years and lends his expert advice to many groups and historical societies. He is excited to give a presentation in the town Tipton lived in for many years.

The Wright Interpretive Center is located at 126 East Walnut Street in downtown Corydon, Indiana. The program is $2 per adult and $1 per student. Cake and punch will be available to all attendees in order to wish Indiana a happy birthday — the actual day is Dec. 11. For questions, call Corydon Capitol State Historic site at 812.738.4890.
